If you’re in the market for an affordable yet quality used car, truck or SUV, you probably have a few questions like what’s CPO? How would I know I’m getting a good deal? Why should I buy a used car from a dealership? All are great questions, and we think that when you’re shopping for such a large investment, there shouldn’t be any surprises that catch you off guard in the process. That’s why we’ve prepared a list of frequently asked questions used car shoppers typically have when browsing our inventories here at Simpson Chevrolet of Garden Grove so you’re informed before you buy. Have additional questions? Feel free to chat us online or call us directly.
What's the difference between used and CPO?
Standards. Certified Pre-Owned models, or CPO, are vehicles that have gone through rigorous testing and inspection to meet the rigid brand standards outlined by the manufacturer. For example, our own Chevrolet CPO models have gone through a 172-point inspection by our certified technicians, checking everything from the engine compartment to the glove box. Any issues found are repaired, and our technicians will also check the model year and mileage of the used vehicle to ensure it meets the restrictions set by the manufacturer.
What should I watch out for in a used car?
No matter if you’re considering buying from a dealer (like us!) or a private seller, inspect the vehicle yourself for exterior, interior and mechanical issues. Check the exterior for extensive damage, but remember that dings, dents and scratches are common cosmetic flaws in used cars. Feel the interior upholstery for tears and rips, check to see if the radio, air conditioning and interior lights work, and see if you spot any stains. Next, pop the hood after your test drive to inspect the engine. And as always, run a CARFAX history report on the model for a big picture on repairs and maintenance.
How do I know that I'm getting a good deal?
Plenty of research. Shop around before scheduling test drives so that you have a good idea of how the market is pricing the vehicle you like. If you have a particular make and model that you like, online resources like Kelley Blue Book® can compare the vehicle’s approximate value to the offered price so that you can see what’s overpriced and what’s a good deal. Our own online trade-in value calculator gives you the True Market Value® in minutes.
Why should I buy from a dealership?
We’re held to a higher standard than private sellers. They won’t be able to guarantee the quality of their vehicle, but we can — we’re the ones who inspected it. Plus, legally, a dealership cannot mislead you about the condition of the used car without facing major consequences, while a private seller could claim ignorance. A dealer also has access to the financial resources that allows buyers special financing and used car specials.
What are the benefits of buying a used car?
How much time do you have? Buying a used car gives you a quality vehicle without the steep price tag. Your model will have already gone through it’s steep depreciation drop, so the value of your car will be better retained once you’re ready to sell (if at all). Parts and services are less expensive for used cars, too, and you’ll have more options when buying since you won’t be tied down to a single model year. Need more reasons to buy a used car?
